Sunday Night Suds - Saranac Bee Catcher Honey Ale

This week's Sunday Night Suds looks at Saranac Bee Catcher Honey Ale.

The Saranac Bee Catcher Honey Ale was one of the four brews contained in the 12 Beers of Spring mix box. This also included the new Ruby Red Ale (reviewed here http://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2020/03/sunday-night-suds-saranac-ruby-red-ale.html) and Polinator Pils and last year's Polar Haze IPA (reviewed here https://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2019/03/sunday-night-suds-saranac-polar-haze-ipa.html).

The Bee Catcher Honey Ale is an American Blonde Ale with some honey added to the brew process, but it is not an overly sweet beer. The beer poured a golden yellow with some lacing, but completely clear. Although it is an ale, there was not much bitter to the beer and it was also quite bready. There was also not much alcohol taste despite the 5.3% abv, which leads me to wonder whether it was just too chilled when I had it.

I have not seen this beer sold in anything but the 12 Beers of Spring Box and I am unaware of this beer being sold in six or twelve packs, so if you want this beer you need to pick up the mix box.

The Beer Catcher Ale is under the Kosher Supervision of the Va'ad of Detroit as is every other beer produced at the Matt Brewery plant in Utica, NY. Keep in mind, Saranac brews some varieties off site, so check the cans/bottles for kosher certification from the Va'ad of Detroit.

Thursday's Parsha Tidbits - Parshas Vayikra

The following is a brief summary of some of thoughts said over by R' Frand on the parsha this evening. I have attempted to reproduce these vorts to the best of my ability. Any perceived inconsistency is the result of my efforts to transcribe the shiur and should not be attributed to R' Frand.

R' Frand quoted R Sorotzkin of Telshe Yeshiva who wrote in the Sefer HaBina V'HaBracha a vort which R' Frand thought was appropriate for the current situation. Rashi writes on the first pasuk of the Parsha that Hashem spoke, but only Moshe heard it. And the sound of Hashem talking to Moshe did not leave the Miskhan. Rashi further explains that you might have thought it was a low voice, but that was incorrect. It was a powerful and splendid voice of Hashem that could fell cedar trees.

So why was it confined in the Ohel Moed? Not because of the decibel level. R' Sorotzkin wrote that in his time (WWII) we saw that there was a powerful voice of Hashem that could destroy anything in its path, but we also saw the splendid voice of the rebuilding of the Yeshivos.

R' Frand remarked that anyone with awareness would see that these events are the Yad Hashem. But the only way that one can see that it is the Yad Hashem is if you were in the Ohel Moed. But people who never went into the Ohel Moed would not recognize it, because he never understood the concept of Yad Hashem. For that person, even if the sound is deafening, he will not here.

R' Frand remarked that today they announced that 3 million people filed for unemployment which is a staggering number. These people lost their jobs because of social distancing, as even with modern medicine, we are not able to stop the virus from spreading.

R' Frand said that this is the pshat in Tehillim - Mah Gadlu Ma'asecha Hashem - Hashem's works are magnificent. But Ish Ba'ar Lo Yeda - a foolish person can live through life and not see Hashem's involvement and just blame it on people eating rats, bats or snakes. But the person who has been in the Ohel Mo'ed can see that it comes from Hashem. And the person who is does see that should daven to Hashem with all the tefillos and Tehillim as He can hear our prayers and be Rofeh Kol Basar.

Sunday Night Suds - New Belgium Voodoo Ranger American Haze

This week's Sunday Night Suds looks at New Belgium's Voodoo Ranger American Haze IPA.

In one of my most recent trips to the beer store I saw that they had the New Belgium Voodoo Ranger American Haze in six packs at 8.99 (a very decent price for Voodoo Ranger products) so I jumped at the opportunity to add it to my cart.

By my count, this is the seventh Voodoo Ranger that New Belgium has released. Previously reviewed Voodoo Ranger brews include Voodoo Ranger Hop Avenger IPA (reviewed here https://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2019/12/sunday-night-suds-new-belgium-voodoo.html); Juicifer IPA (reviewed here https://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2019/11/sunday-night-suds-new-belgium-juicifer.html); Juicy Haze IPA (https://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2018/02/sunday-night-suds-new-belgium-voodoo.html); Imperial IPA (https://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2017/10/sunday-nigh-suds-new-belgium-voodoo.html); Atomic Pumpkin IPA (https://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2017/10/sunday-night-suds-new-belgium-voodoo.html); and the first - the Voodoo Ranger IPA (https://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2017/02/sunday-night-suds-new-belgium-voodoo.html).

The American Haze was true to its name - hazy and cloudy. The beer had an inch or so of foam when I poured it and the lacing stayed on the glass for some time. There was an instant hit of pink grapefruit when I took my first sip, and it stayed with me well after the swallow. There is no fruit juice added to this beer and the citrus comes from the hops which are identified on the website as  Strata, Amarillo, and HBC 522.

I have only seen this beer in six packs of cans, which seems to be a trend for the Voodoo Ranger. Its not a hard and fast rule as New Belgium does produce a seasonal mix box which usually includes one Voodoo Ranger, but its just one kind.

The New Belgium Voodoo Ranger American Haze IPA is under kosher supervision by the Scroll-K/Va'ad of Denver, and their symbol is on the bottom of the six pack can box. However, not every brew produced by New Belgium is under kosher supervision, so look for the Scroll K on the six pack holder or box when considering purchasing any NBB product. Many of the "sours" such as the Peach Kick which was released over the summer cannot be certified kosher.

Thursday's Parsha Tidbits - Parshas Ki Sissa

The following is a brief summary of some of thoughts said over by R' Frand on the parsha this evening. I have attempted to reproduce these vorts to the best of my ability. Any perceived inconsistency is the result of my efforts to transcribe the shiur and should not be attributed to R' Frand.

R' Frand began this week's parsha vort by noting the apparent contradiction between the Kohain Gadol not wearing gold when he entered the Kodesh Kodashim on Yom Kippur and the fact that it was Aharon himself who served as Kohain Gadol while the Jews were in the desert. If the reason that the Kohain Gadol did not wear gold was because the prosecutor (i.e. gold being a reminder of the sin of the golden calf) cannot be the defense attorney, then why was Aharon entering in the first place? After all, he was intimately involved in the creation of the Egel?

R' Frand answered by quoting R' Boruch Sorotzkin who explains in his sefer HaBina V'ha Bracha that Aharon was well suited to serve as Kohain Gadol because he took the sin on himself. Having seen that the Jews had already killed Hur for not going along, Aharon stood up and said "its on me" (I am pretty sure R' Frand used those specific words). Since Aharon was involved in the sin as a way to prevent the Jews from being punished, he was worthy to stand on behalf of the Jews on Yom Kippur to seek forgiveness from Hashem.

R' Frand also said a second vort from the same sefer in connection with Moshe's actions. Again, he asked a famous question - at the time that Moshe came down from Har Sinai he knew that the Jews had already been worshiping the Egel. So why did he bring the Luchos down? Why couldn't he have just left them up on the mountain?

R' Frand answered in the name of R' Sorotzkin that Moshe knew that the Jews had sinned, but he thought that he could "come down and give them a Musar Shmooze" and then they would do teshuva. However, once he came down from the mountain and observed that they were dancing with the Egel and pointing at it as a deity, he had to break the luchos.

R' Frand also mentioned that there was a parallel to the concept of Sotah. A woman who is unfaithful but wishes to stay with her husband and does not want to admit to the infidelity will drink the water which is mixed with the erased ink from the Sotah scroll. So too, the Jews who were unfaithful in that they worshiped the Egel, were given the ground up Egel in water to drink by Moshe.

R' Frand said a powerful thought on the Covid-19 virus, but I am not ready to summarize it tonight. But I (Neil) do wish all the Cholim a refuah sheleima and hope that we will all return to our shuls and schools Bimheira Biyameinu.

Tuesday's Special Thoughts On Purim

The following are excerpts of a very special shiur that I heard from Rabbi Mansour (given last Thursday night in place of the regular Parsha shiur). The shiur was over an hour, so it is somewhat condensed here, but I have attempted to reproduce these vorts to the best of my ability. Any perceived inconsistency is the result of my efforts to transcribe the shiur and should not be attributed to R' Mansour.

R' Mansour began with a reference to the famous Gemara which asks about the mentioning of various players from the Purim story in the Torah. But then he asked - Purim min HaTorah minayin? He answered by saying that it can be found in the story of Yosef and his brothers from Parshas Mikeitz.

The Esther story begins in the third year of Achasverus' reign (Esther 1:3) and the Yosef in Egypt story with Pharaoh begins in the third year after the dreams of the Sar HaMashkim and Sar HaOfim are interpreted (Bereishis 41:1).

But the comparisons are legion - in Bereishis 41:34, Yosef instructs Pharaoh -יַֽעֲשֶׂ֣ה פַרְעֹ֔ה וְיַפְקֵ֥ד פְּקִדִ֖ים עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ . Similarly in Esther 2:3 -  וְיַפְקֵ֨ד הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ פְּקִידִים֘

In the next pasuk, Yosef again instructs - וְיִקְבְּצ֗וּ אֶת־כָּל־אֹ֨כֶל֙ הַשָּׁנִ֣ים הַטֹּב֔וֹת. And later in the same pasuk in Esther - וְיִקְבְּצ֣וּ אֶת־כָּל־נַֽעֲרָֽה־בְ֠תוּלָ֠ה.

Later in Bereishis 43:30 after Yosef sees Binyamin - וַיִּרְחַ֥ץ פָּנָ֖יו וַיֵּצֵ֑א וַיִּ֨תְאַפַּ֔ק וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שִׂ֥ימוּ לָֽחֶם. And in Esther 5:1 - וַיִּתְאַפַּ֣ק הָמָ֔ן וַיָּב֖וֹא אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ.

Finally in Bereishis 43:14 Ya'akov reluctantly allows Binyamin to go saying -וְשִׁלַּ֥ח לָכֶ֛ם אֶת־אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אַחֵ֖ר וְאֶת־בִּנְיָמִ֑ין וַֽאֲנִ֕י כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁכֹ֖לְתִּי שָׁכָֽלְתִּי . This is highly reminiscent to Esther telling Mordechai when he tells her to go to the king -  וְכַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר אָבַ֖דְתִּי אָבָֽדְתִּי .

R' Mansour also mentioned the parallelism of the ten sons of Ya'akov who go down initially to see Yosef and the ten sons of Haman. But what is the connection between the two stories?

R' Mansour began making the connection by talking about Yosef's request for Binyamin to be brought down and the later giving of multiple extra gifts to Binyamin in front of the brothers. This was sure to make his father anxious and potentially to provoke more jealousy from the brothers.

R' Mansour then mentioned the old statement of Chazal about the four galuyos being hinted to by the galus of Egypt. He then quoted the Sar Shalom of Belz who stated that the four trips that the brothers made down to Egypt symbolized the four galuyos.

Based on this thought - the second trip to Egypt was with Binyamin. Once he arrives there is the meal where the brothers could have been jealous. However the gemara states that the five clothes given to Binyamin was a hint to the special five clothes that Mordechai wore in Esther 8:15. And immediately thereafter - וְהָעִ֣יר שׁוּשָׁ֔ן צָֽהֲלָ֖ה וְשָׂמֵֽחָה.

Furthermore during the meal with the brothers, Yosef served wine and they drank. Rashi says that during the time that the brothers and Yosef were separated, neither drank wine. So here was the first time that they drank - but it also says that they got drunk. And there is only one holiday that there is an obligation to get drunk...

R' Mansour then quoted a Medrash which states that Hashem said about the brothers sale of Yosef - you sold Yosef and then sat down to eat and drink. This bill was paid when Haman and Ahasveros sat down to eat and drink and sealed their bargain to wipe out the Jews.

But since Yosef had a connection to this gezeira because he was sold, he knew that he had to make a tikun.

The Meshech Chachma states that the sale by the brothers is like an ulcer and that every time that the Jews fight, this sin flairs up as well. We see this problem in the megillah as Haman states  יֶשְׁנ֣וֹ עַם־אֶחָ֗ד מְפֻזָּ֤ר וּמְפֹרָד֙ בֵּ֣ין הָֽעַמִּ֔ים - the words can be read as the nation was suffering from pirud - separation. And Haman and Amalek know that we are vulnerable when there is pirud.

The Chida states that this is the reason that Binyamin though his descendants - Mordechai and Esther are integral in ending the gezeira. Binyamin was not involved in the sale and he was integral in proving that there would be no more fighting among the brothers. By not being jealous of Binyamin getting the extra portions, the brothers showed that they had achdus and had learned from their previous bad acts.

This is why they drank after the extra gifts were given. The brothers passed the test by not being jealous. Having seen that, Yosef now finally has a drink because he sees they have repented and they do too.

At the end of the parsha, Yosef tells his brothers in Bereishis 44:17 -  וְאַתֶּ֕ם עֲל֥וּ לְשָׁל֖וֹם אֶל־אֲבִיכֶֽם. Similarly, in the end of the Megillah it states

Iyh, the show of Achdus and all the mitzvos of Purim will be a Melitz Yosher before Hashem to end the current gezeira as well.

Sunday Night Suds - Saranac Ruby Red Ale

This week's pre-Purim Sunday Night Suds looks at Saranac Ruby Red Ale.

Although its been a bit too hard find, Saranac has released a new Spring Beers mix box for 2020. This box contains four beers (as they always do) but only one repeat - the Polar Haze IPA (reviewed here https://kosherbeers.blogspot.com/2019/03/sunday-night-suds-saranac-polar-haze-ipa.html) and that beer was only introduced last year. The new beers are Bee Catcher, a honey ale, Pollinator Pils (obviously a pilsner) and the Ruby Red Ale.

The Ruby Red Ale is juice infused and it is fairly obvious that the taste is coming from the grapefruit and not from the hops. There is a wheat ale base to the beer (although the gurus at BA call it an American Amber/Red Ale) but its a very mild base. I am sure that there are some hops in the brew (beyond the obvious reasons) and there is some hop bite. But mostly this is a juice beer, the kind that you can give to someone who prefers alcopop at your Purim Seudah. This beer is a bit light on the alcohol at 4.9% abv, but even that seems to be a bit on the high side.

I have not seen this beer sold in anything but the 12 Beers of Spring Box and I am unaware of this beer being sold in six or twelve packs, so if you want this beer you need to pick up the mix box.

The Ruby Red Ale is under the Kosher Supervision of the Va'ad of Detroit as is every other beer produced at the Matt Brewery plant in Utica, NY. Keep in mind, Saranac brews some varieties off site, so check the cans/bottles for kosher certification from the Va'ad of Detroit.

Thursday's Parsha (Plus Purim) Tidbits - Parshas Tezaveh

Tonight the TCN broadcast a shiur given by R' Dovid Heber in place of the usual Rabbi Frand shiur. I would like to briefly recount some vorts which R' Heber said as part of the shiur. Any perceived inconsistencies are the result of my efforts to transcribe the shiur and should not be attributed to R' Heber.

R' Heber began the vort by quoting a Gemara in Menachos (also found in Erchin) which asks why the Torah's discussion of the clothing of the Kohanim is in close proximity to the Karbanos. The Gemara answers that the same way that the Karbanos atone for a person, the clothing of the Kohain Gadol did as well. The Me'il atones for Lashon Hara, the Mitznefes atones for haughtiness, the Tzis atones for Azos Panim (loosely translated as being brazen to others).

The Malbim teaches that the same way that clothing covers our bodies, our deeds cover our souls. When you look at a person you see their clothing, not their body itself. Similarly if a person is referred to as having a good Neshama, it is because of their actions as no one sees another person's soul.

R' Heber said that the upshot of the Gemara and Malbim is that in the same way that a person spends money to buy himself nice clothes, he should also work hard on his Middos to acquire a nice covering for his Neshama.

R' Heber linked this to a Mishna in Pirkei Avos which says that a person should be brazen like a leopard to do Hashem's will. Only when a person is doing Hashem's will should he be brazen - R' Heber gave the example of putting on tefillin in an airport.

R' Heber also quoted his Rebbi, R' Keller of Chicago, who underscores that the end of the Mishna (stating that brazenness is only acceptable when in the course of doing Hashem's will) is followed by a Yehi Ratzon about rebuilding the Beis HaMikdash, But why is that mentioned - the Mishna does not usually mention a prayer as part of the statement of halacha? He answered that if someone does not use the brazenness in the worship of Hashem, it could G-D forbid lead to a Churban.

R' Heber also said a vort on the Megillah from the Manas Levi written by R' Shlomo Alkabetz. When Haman convinces Achasveros to allow him to decree against the Jews, there are scrolls sent out to all the land. The pasuk which mentions it (Esther 3:13) has every letter of the alphabet (first and last letters) except for the end Tzaddik. Why?

The first answer he gave was that because Haman was saying previously - Yeshno Am - the people are sleeping and not doing mitzvos, therefore it mentions the Alef- Beis - because this is the building block of the entire Torah. If a person wants to write a Torah, he could look at this pasuk and see the images of all the letters.

The second answer he gave was that it was a message to the Jews - we see that Hashem loves us, even when we are doing wrong and there is a decree, the Torah (as embodied by all the letters of the Alef Beis) will protect us.

R' Heber then quoted the Be'er Hetev which notes that there is no end Peh in our weekday Shmoneh Esreh and Benching. The end Peh is usually associated with negativity -  Hashem's anger (Af, Ketzef). However the Al HaNissim which we pray on Purim has the end Peh - because even when Hashem is angry with us and the end Tzaddik - symbolic of the tree (etz) that Haman wanted to hang us on, Hashem will save and redeem us.

R' Heber closed the vort by noting that there is one pasuk in Tanach which has every single letter (beginning and end). The pasuk is in Zefanyah 3:8. R' Heber noted the Gemara in Berachos 57b (last Shabbos' daf!) discusses the next pasuk (3:9) in which all the nations of the world will want to come and convert at the time of Mashiach. The pasuk says that they will speak a Safah Berurah - a clear language. Where will they get it from? From the previous pasuk which contains each letter of the Alef Bes.

We should iyh know yeshua from all troubles and oppression in the near future.
